Who Was Saint Nicholas?

I had an interesting conversation with a lady at the Department of Motor Vehicles.  She said something to my son about being good so Santa Claus would bring him presents, and without thinking much about it I said, "Oh, he knows about Santa." Well, she was quite taken aback...probably because my son is three years old.  She asked me why and then I felt a little awkward.  I knew why I had chosen to tell my son the truth about Saint Nicholas, but I didn't want to offend her.

Well, I decided to tell her the truth, since that's what it's all about! "I want him to trust me and know that I would never lie to him.", I said, while bracing for impact.  Then she kind of surprised me by saying that I was the second person that she had talked to who had that opinion, and that she hoped her daughters would go that route with her grandkids!

Shew! She didn't think I was a total weirdo, or worse yet, "depriving my child" of the fun of Santa.  I told her that I was a Christian and although we don't avoid Santa, I wanted to make sure that my son kept his focus on the birth of Jesus, etc.

Since that day, I have come across two different articles talking about just that! You may read the one by Pastor Mark Driscoll HERE. I think he gives a good explanation, and a historical background of Santa Claus that is very interesting. He even mentions the Veggie Tales movie "Saint Nicholas" which my son enjoys watching.

What are your thoughts on kids and Christmas? Let me know in the comment section below, in a spirit of love and understanding of course. ;-)

  1. Up until recently we were in the same boat as you. Then I watched some video's on the history of Christmas and both my wife and I where appalled. Even though we are Christians, we no longer celebrate Christmas at all. Check out these video's and let me know what you think.

    1. I watched the first link, and intend to watch the others. Thanks for sharing!
