If ye love wealth better than liberty...

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."
- Samuel Adams, Speech at the Philadelphia State House, August 1, 1776.

Wow. Harsh, right? Well...is it just harsh, or harsh and true? If it is, indeed, harsh and true perhaps we should ponder the words.

1) If ye love wealth better than liberty...
How many ways are there to get money from the government today? Food stamps, unemployment, WIC, grants, vouchers, loans, subsidies, etc etc etc. We're all guilty of it, well most of us at least. We want our country to get through this...”rough patch”, but give up our entitlements?? OUCH! How can we survive? Times are tough!

Yes...times are tough, but who are we putting our trust in? God or government? Are we sacrificing our liberty for security? Wealth vs. liberty. Which will you choose? This is not to make light of legitimately tight finances. I'm with you. I get it. (Trust me.) But where are our hearts? Where is our trust? Ponder, pray, talk to your spouse. Is it possible to make changes in order to be free from the entangling and oppressing arm of government “help”? Jehovah Jireh is our provider!

2) ...the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom...

Who likes to make a scene? Who likes to “go against the flow”? I don't want to stir up the pot, or rock the boat! This may be how the separatists felt at first. After trying to make changes in the Church of England they decided that they should simply separate and do things on their own as they believed the Bible called them to do. When that was no longer possible they were forced to leave England and they became the Pilgrims. About 150 years after arriving in America their descendants were forced to declare their independence from England because of the reasons stated in the Declaration of Independence. At that point they had to say enough is enough and stand up to the tyrannical government that was oppressing them.

Now as Americans it is our duty to protect the freedom that they fought and died for. In our case, there is no where left to go! This is the “land of the free and home of the brave”. If we will not be brave and vocal, we will no longer be free. And what then? What will we tell our children? “Oh, sorry honey Mommy and Daddy were really busy with work, housecleaning, church, school, and extracurricular activities”? Where would we be today if the Puritans, Separatists, Pilgrims, and Founding Fathers had said that? Why should we feel any less obligated to fight for the liberty of our posterity?

3) “...go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms...”

There is a point at which we stop. We stop trying to convince others to take a stand for liberty. A point at which we say “I know not what course others may take, but as for me, Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!” And then we figuratively part ways.
When this point comes we must focus inward and prepare ourselves. Are we ready to be leaders? Are we ready to go against the flow of tyranny? Are we strong within our family unit? Are we willing to work hard without government involvement? It is time to take personal responsibility for our own lives. Our food, our shelter, our businesses, our children's education, our health; all are currently supported and regulated by government. Are we ready to walk the walk when we're done talking the talk?

4) “Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

This is tough. We know and love many people who do not understand the seriousness of the situation we are in as a country. Many confuse collectivism with compassion, socialism with service, tyranny with tender care. Many do not know the history associated with communism, many do not know the influence that communism or “collective salvation” currently has on this country, many are unwilling to open their eyes to a picture of treason. I, personally, have heard the facts, the quotes, the audio and videoof people in governmental office whose ideology is the opposite of the ideology that made this country exceptional. We were built on Godly principles and with the direction and protection of Divine Providence, but some are unwilling to hear the truth. Debate is healthy for a time, but if we are abandoning our responsibilities in order to spend more time arguing about politics this is unhealthy. There is a point to pray and let God be God and realize that it is not OUR job to be the Savior of the World. Jesus has that role covered. = ) *Deep breath and sigh of relief.*

So, what does this all mean to me? What's the point of this post?

I suppose my goal in writing this is to plead with you to make November something important to you. Can you look beyond the political mud slinging and see that it is your responsibility to vote because that right has been fought for, for many generations? It's so easy to say, “I don't like the candidates, so I'm not voting.” That's a cop out! That is no excuse. Men have shed their blood for America's freedom. Don't throw it away. You may think I'm sounding a bit intense, but Samuel Adams didn't shrink back and neither should I. Vote in November, and the August primary if you can. Do it for those who came before you and those who will come after you. Do your homework and vote.
